HFCS a.k.a. The Devil

BanHFCSWhat is the worst thing the food industry has come up with in the last 30 years?  Well, that list is long, but topping the list is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

Why is it so bad?  Let’s see…

  1. High Fructose Corn Syrup is made from starches like corn, wheat, and rice. High fructose syrup contains nearly equal amounts of glucose and fructose, a composition nearly identical to good ‘ol table sugar (sucrose).   The reason high fructose corn syrup is so abundant in our processed food is simple-it’s cheaper than sugar. Because we highly subsidize corn and place tariffs on sugar imports, high fructose corn syrup is much less expensive.  BINGO.  It saves the food giants MONEY, which they trade for YOUR HEALTH.
  2. Most of the corn in this country is genetically modified.  HFCS is no different.  The corn industry doesn’t want the food giants to stop using HFCS.  There have even been extremely misleading commercials about how “good and natural” it is.  Puhleeaze.  What boat do they think we just got off of?  You see, HFCS is SOOO bad for you entire towns have banned it from their grocery shelves.  Every time you buy a processed food product containing HFCS, you are helping these big food companies make money and prolong our obestiy epidemic.  If you are a parent feeding this stuff to your kids, you are risking their health and setting them up to possibly become diabetic.  Our bodies were NEVER meant to eat this altered sweetner, and they cannot handle it.
  3.  In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides. The researchers say the work sheds light on the factors contributing to obesity trends in the United States.“Some people have claimed that high-fructose corn syrup is no different than other sweeteners when it comes to weight gain and obesity, but our results make it clear that this just isn’t true, at least under the conditions of our tests,” said psychology professor Bart Hoebel, who specializes in the neuroscience of appetite, weight and sugar addiction. “When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they’re becoming obese — every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don’t see this; they don’t all gain extra weight.” When you incorporate these fats into our body’s cells (the cell membranes) triglycerides cause these cells to be insulin resistant. This is the reason that high fructose corn syrup leads to diabetes. Fructose is linked to significant increases of both cholesterol and triglycerides. And remember-fructose, like sucrose, is a highly refined processed sugar devoid of any nutrition.

What can you do?  VIGILANTLY read your labels and NEVER, I mean NEVER buy ANYTHING with HFCS in the ingredients.  It isn’t enough to cut down.  Some towns have even made it ILLEGAL.

One of the best Documentaries about all this is KING CORN.  Watch the trailer for this and get an idea of what I’m eluding to:
